Microsoft W10 Latest
(Updated: 23rd Sept. '25)
(Updated: 23rd Sept. '25)
Microsoft's free support for Windows 10 officially ends on 14th October, 2025.
After this date, your device will no longer receive free security updates, significantly increasing its vulnerability to cyber threats.
The MS recommended path is to upgrade to Windows 11 if your PC meets the compatibility requirements.
However, for those who cannot or choose not to upgrade, here are your options moving forward:
1. Free Extended Security Updates (ESU)
You can get one year of free ESU, covering up to 10 devices on the same Microsoft Account, until October 2026 by:
- linking your PC settings to OneDrive* through Windows Backup, or
- by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
This provides critical and important security updates, but no new features or bug fixes.
*Linking your PC to OneDrive will incur a cost if your storage needs exceed the free 5GB of OneDrive data. There are ways to manage how much PC data is sync'd with OneDrive; as well as the options to most cost-effectively buy more OneDrive, Google-Drive and Local storage.
2. Pay MS for Extended Security Updates (ESU)
Individual UK consumers can purchase a one-year ESU subscription for £25 inc. VAT, covering up to 10 devices on the same Microsoft Account.
This covers critical and important security updates for that year.
3. Pay OPATCH for Security Updates (ESU)
This Slovenian company is offering 5 years of W10 Critical Security Patches until October 2030 for a fixed-price of £25.85 inc. VAT per year covering 1 computer (only).
4. Force Windows 10 To Upgrade (Free)
If MicroSoft won't let you Upgrade your PC to W11, your can force an Upgrade using the free Flyoobe software.
5. Keep your PC & Switch to LINUX or ChromeOS Flex (Free)
This option is the most cost-effective and also the most secure alternative Operating Systems.
There are many LINUX Distributions from which to choose e.g. Mint or ZorinOS.
ChromeOS Flex is Google's browser-based, easy to use Operating System; identical to ChromeOS on ChromeBooks but without Play Store access for Android Apps. That said, most web sites offer the functionality needed by most people e.g. Zoom, Teams, MS Office (PWA).
