Microsoft's free support for Windows 10 officially ends on October 14, 2025.
After this date, your device will no longer receive free security updates, significantly increasing its vulnerability to cyber threats.
The recommended path is to upgrade to Windows 11 if your PC meets the compatibility requirements.
However, for those who cannot or choose not to upgrade, Microsoft has recently announced new options for continued security:
1. >Free< Extended Security Updates (ESU) NEW
You can get one year of free ESU until October 2026 by:
- linking your PC settings to OneDrive* through Windows Backup, or
- by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
This provides critical and important security updates, but no new features or bug fixes.
* Linking your PC to OneDrive will incur a cost if your storage needs exceed the free 5GB of OneDrive data. There are ways to manage how much PC data is sync'd with OneDrive; as well as the options to most cost-effectively buy more OneDrive (and Local) storage.
2. Paid Extended Security Updates (ESU)
Individual consumers can purchase a one-year ESU subscription for $30 (likely £30 in the UK).
This also covers critical and important security updates for that year.
