Windows 10 - Another Free Year
(Updated: 21st Oct. '26)
(Updated: 21st Oct. '26)
If you're still using a Windows 10 PC, Microsoft has some unexpected good news: free Extended Security Updates (ESU) for home users have been extended by a full year.
They were due to stop on 13th October 2026. They will now continue until 12th October 2027.
1. Already signed up? Nothing to do
If your PC is already enrolled in ESU, Microsoft says your cover continues automatically until October 2027. No action needed.
2. Not signed up yet? You still can
You can enrol at any time until 12th October 2027. Your PC needs to be on Windows 10 version 22H2, have its latest updates installed, and be signed in with a Microsoft Account.
To check: click Start, then Settings, then Update & Security, then Windows Update. If your PC isn't enrolled, you'll see an Enrol now link there.
The free ways to enrol are the same as last year:
- Turn on Windows Backup, which syncs your PC settings to OneDrive, or
- Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
Alternatively, Microsoft still sells a one-year ESU licence. One licence covers up to 10 PCs on the same Microsoft Account.
3. What it does - and doesn't - do
ESU provides critical and important security fixes only. There are no new features, and October 2027 is still the end of the road for Windows 10.
4. Use the extra year wisely
This gives you breathing space to plan your next step calmly, rather than in a rush. Your options are unchanged - see our Windows 10 Survival Guide.
Bear in mind that computer prices are rising (see this month's news snippets), so waiting until the last minute may cost more.
As always, HTS are happy to check whether your PC is enrolled, or to talk through 'where next' after Windows 10.
